The Lab

Slow work, built from the bottom up.

Put a lid on a jar of moss and plants and it starts making its own weather. Water climbs the glass overnight and runs back down by morning, and the plants carry on with very little help. We still find that a bit magic.

Every Omni terrarium is built by hand in Kuala Lumpur, from the bottom up, the same way every time: lava rock for drainage, sphagnum and charcoal to keep things fresh, vermiculite and akadama soil for the roots, then stone, wood and plants, then moss, sand and the small pieces that finish it. It's slow work, and we like it that way.

We make pieces for homes and offices. And because plenty of people would rather build their own, we run workshops for that too.

Becoming 空我

A white path climbs past a pagoda and a small stone bridge to a Buddha at the top. It comes from an old story about a monk who spends his life climbing to find the Buddha, and only at the summit sees it had been beside him all along.

Inside the glass

Every terrarium we build is soilless, with the same ten layers. Here they are in an Octagon.

  1. Lava rockLets water drain away from the roots
  2. Sphagnum mossHolds water and keeps the layers apart
  3. CharcoalKeeps the bottom layers fresh
  4. VermiculiteHolds water and air around the roots
  5. Akadama soilClay granules the roots grow through
  6. HardscapeStone and wood that shape the landscape
  7. PlantsPicked to grow well side by side
  8. MossThe green carpet over everything
  9. Decorative sand and stonesA path to walk the eye through
